This week we are high-fiving WANNABE's Athlete of the Week: Jessica Crate!! Jessica has a passion for helping others cultivate a champion's mindset from the inside out. This week, she shares with us valuable lessons she has learned in her journey of being an elite marathon runner and world-class triathlete.
Hi Jessica! Tell us a little about yourself and your fitness journey!
I have been a fitness fanatic since I came out of the womb. Growing up, I played soccer, basketball, volleyball, was in gymnastics, swimming, dance, water and snow sports and then ran varsity track and cross country. I have competed on the World stage for both Team Canada and Team USA for both cross country, track and field, triathlon and the marathon. I am now a yoga instructor and certified performance movement teacher, USATF and Natural Running Coach. My goals this year since moving to Park City, UT are trail racing and mountain biking. :-)
What first inspired you to pursue this path?
I fell into running in middle school and fell in love with the freeing aspects of the sport. Running is a sport that eliminates all judgement as it's you against the clock and your mind. I picked up running while playing varsity soccer and then chose to pursue a track and cross country scholarship for college. I am so grateful for what this sport has taught me and afforded me to do: traveling the world as an athlete, coaching others, and cultivating a champion mindset.
What do you believe to be your greatest strength and weakness?
My greatest strength is also my greatest weakness... I like to go FAST in everything I do, so sometimes this can be an incredible asset or a downfall. ;-) I also love to WIN and have a competitive drive that pushes me to excel or at least do my absolute best, no matter what.
Have you worked with coaches? If so, what is one major takeaway that you have learned through them?
I have worked with coaches all my life. WOW! So many incredible nuggets I have learned along the journey. I'll have to give two major takeaways from a couple of my favorite coaches.
#1 - "If you're 5 minutes early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late." Always show up early and prepare your body, mind, and soul for the task at hand and you will succeed when you give yourself time for visualization.
#2 - "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." No matter how talented you are, you'll be outpaced by someone who put in the hard work when you weren't looking, so PLAN, DO, REVIEW. :-)
What is the hardest part about what you do?
Endurance sports require a lot of training both mentally and physically. Running, cycling, triathlon and yoga test the limits of your mind as well as your body. I find this the most challenging to keep my mind in check so I can test the limits of my body. It is a daily practice!
What is the most rewarding?
Being able to challenge my body and see how far I can push myself. I find it extremely rewarding to crush a goal and breakthrough limitations that I once had in my mind. It catapults you to the next level to see what else you can accomplish!
What is your nutrition like? Any tips?
I am a HUGE proponent of bio-hacking. Being in the health and wellness industry, I now realize that there is no "one size fits all", so being able to hack my biology through nutrition for my genes is key! I eat a healthy, colorful, balanced diet. I highly recommend getting started on Nrf2 to keep your body balanced daily, reducing stress and inflammation while helping you recover faster and have more energy. From there, the sky is the limit! I make my own dressings, sprout and eat mostly a raw vegan diet full of veggies, nuts, and fruits. I incorporate seafood weekly and occasionally lean red meat for extra creatine while training in altitude.
Do you have any words of encouragement for women who are just beginning their fitness journey?
NEVER GIVE UP! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. BELIEVE in yourself and have faith that you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to. We were given these beautiful bodies to nurture, love and care for. Test your limits and you'll find that you too can Cultivate A Champion Mindset from the inside out!
Looking forward to the future, who do you WANNABE?
I want to live and lead a legacy, inspiring other women, girls and incredible humans that no matter where you are in life, you can go from broken to bringing it! I desire to be a role model for others that encourages individuals to think outside the box, cultivate a champion mindset from the inside out and truly live a life that demands an eternal explanation.
